Colorado’s proposed regulations on flaring—a process in which operators simply burn off natural gas causing methane, CO2 and other pollutants to be emitted into the air—are simply not strong enough.
More than $12-million-worth of Colorado natural gas (nearly 4.6-billion cubic feet of natural gas) is vented and flared off at well sites across the state every year, wasting valuable resources and polluting our air, and puts communities at risk while dialing up the climate crisis.
Colorado can end routine flaring by enacting simple and commonsense requirements such as gas capture planning and limiting venting and flaring to emergency situations. It is critical that restrictions on flaring be applied to both new and existing wells throughout the state.
But the deadline to speak out and call for these controls is October 20. Add your voice before it’s too late!
